4 Frequently Asked Questions with Answers You Don't Want to Miss

I've been in business for close to 29 years (almost half my life!).  I've heard some of the same questions asked over the years, usually by people new to custom window treatments. The following are answers to my most frequently asked questions.

Before you start reading, I will say that there are no stupid questions. I am happy to answer anything to help educate people on the process of custom treatments.

FAQ #1: What is the difference between custom window fashions and retail?

Custom window treatments are made to YOUR specifications, fit your window, and are in the color and or pattern that best suits the room.  Retail window treatments are what-you-see-is-what-you-get, available in set lengths and widths, and only come in a certain number of colors/patterns.  Retail treatments are not one size fits all and are not easy to alter.

Be sure to read my in-depth retail vs. custom window treatments post for more differences between the two.

FAQ #2: How much do custom window treatments cost?

This is a difficult question to answer as there are many factors that go into the cost. I can give a starting cost based on rough measurements. Style of treatment, details such as trim or banding, finished dimensions, and choice of lining all affect the cost.  The biggest factor affecting the cost is the choice of fabric.

This question is similar to asking how much a vehicle costs.  The answer is, it depends.

FAQ #3: What types of window treatments do you offer?

I offer both hard and soft window treatments.  Soft treatments are drapery panels, valances, cornices, curtains, and fabric Roman shades.  I make soft treatments in my studio workroom and use industrial sewing machines and hand sewing techniques, depending on the treatment or the fabric.

I partner with Lafayette Interior Fashions to offer hard treatments such as wood blinds, shutters, solar shades, cellular shades, and transitional shades. If you’re considering hard window treatments, my post about blinds, shades and shutters will help guide your decision.

FAQ #4: Can I use my own fabric?

Whether or not I use your fabric depends on its source and what you'd like to have made.  I love repurposing antique textiles into something new— I've made beautiful slipcovers, bedding, and pillows from heirloom fabrics and needlepoint.

Fabrics that have been folded for a long time or come from a local fabric store are often difficult to work with and may incur an additional fee to use.

If you have additional questions we didn't answer in this post, reach out to me. I would love to chat and answer those questions!

Until next time,
Laura
