How to Choose Window Treatments Based on Your Design Style

Every person is different; wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same?  We all prefer certain colors, patterns, textures, aesthetics, etc.  Within these variations, we tend to gravitate toward one design style or another.

In this month's blog, I'll be sharing information about the window treatments that jive best with each particular design style.  Not sure what your style is?  No worries - I'll also include a few details on each so that you will be able to identify something you are comfortable with.

1. The traditionalist

Think of an historic home: classic furnishings, elegant wallpaper, antique accents, patterned or textured rugs, and statement lighting are perfectly suited here.

Window treatments that work well in a Traditional setting are Roman shades in neutral patterns, classic drapery panels, swags, and plantation shutters.  All are timeless and classic, either by themselves or combining two for a regal, layered look.

2. The Contemporary

This is a more simple, streamlined look that has subtle sophistication and deliberate used of texture.  Contemporary style showcases the space rather than the things and is sleek, simple, and spacious.

Window treatments that best compliment this style have clean style lines that don't clutter the space.  Vertical blinds that add height  to the room or roller shades that provide function without fuss are good examples.  Ripplefold panels are a great way to incorporate textiles while coordinating with the design style.

3. The Transitionalist

Transitional style is the bridge between traditional and contemporary styles and has both clean and rounded lines.  Combining both styles of furniture, finishes, materials, and fabrics equates this classic, sophisticated design.

If you lean towards Traditional, Roman shades in neutral fabrics are for you.  Do you lean more contemporary?  Try sleek Roller shades  Pairing either of these with pleated or grommet stationary panels is a timeless look.

4. The Mid-Century Modernist

If you are in your late 50's or older, you remember this style.  If you have watched shows like Mad Men, you've seen this style.  Clean lines and minimal ornamentation with high functionality dictate this style.  It's traditional in a sleek new way.

If you love this retro look, consider textured roller shades that add nature to a room without compromising the clean lines.  Wooden blinds are another great option.  Adding stationary panels to shades or blinds adds color and style without fuss.

5. The Rustic

The Rustic, or Modern Farmhouse, style is a no fuss aesthetic.  This style showcases the beauty of subdued hues and natural materials (think wooden beams or touches of stone and clay) and comfortable furnishings.

Roman shades or functioning drapery panels in natural materials and colors compliment this style.  Wood shutters can also help create a cozy cabin feel.

No matter which design style you prefer, there is a window treatment to suit your needs.  Window treatments help finish the room and add color.  Consider layering treatments for a designer look.  Reimagine your window treatments with your preferred design style in mind.  Not sure what you want?  I'd be happy to help!  I have my own preferences, but I fully respect the choices of other people and don't impose my style on others.

If you are unsure of your design style and want some professional assistance - give me a call!  I'd be happy to help beautify your windows.

Until next time,
