My Top 3 Options for Donating and Recycling Your Purged Items

My husband and I had three days to clear our living room, an office, and two large closets after a car hit our house so repairs could begin.

During the process, we often asked ourselves, "Why do we still have this?" In the end, we donated a carload full of clothing. When the rooms and closets are ready to be used again, we will take our time and go through items and furniture to decide what we keep and what goes.

Have you recently purged your closet but don’t know where to donate or recycle? Today I”m sharing 3 options for your gently used items…

Option #1: Donating Gently Used Items

I am fortunate to live in an area with several options for donating. For example, in  Lafayette, Indiana, Habitat Restore takes building supplies and household goods. Once the supplies are sold, the proceeds help Habitat for Humanity build. Other donation locations include:

  • Goodwill Central and Southern Indiana takes household goods, furniture, clothing, and more to help provide job opportunities.

  • Dress for Success takes professional business attire to help women thrive in work and attain economic independence.

  • Bravely Women's Health (formerly Matrix Life Care) takes maternity, baby, children's clothes, and baby items.

Option #2: Consign or Sell Online

If your items are in almost new condition and you don’t want to set up a tag sale, consider consignment shops like women’s clothing stores, Twice as Nice, and Reclaimed Hope. Sell it Here consigns home goods, and Merry Go Round consigns children's items in the Indianapolis area.

You can also use online options, including Facebook Marketplace and Nextdoor. If you’re looking to refresh your current space, check out these 3 ways to update easily!

Option #3: Recycling & More

Are your items beyond use? Think about recycling them before tossing them into the garbage can. Oscar Winski accepts electronics and metals once a month. If you need help removing large items, contact Fats' Junk Removal and Demolition or Fire Dawgs Junk Removal.

If the task of decluttering seems overwhelming, ask a friend or sibling for help. Or you can start small with one closet at a time.  It's a great feeling to know that you no longer have this extra "stuff," and by donating, you may have made a difference in someone’s life.
