How to Uncover Your Interior Design Style and Why You Should Care

Interior design should reflect your unique style, memories, likes, and personal taste. So there is no right or wrong. For example, if the trend is open and contemporary, but you are a more traditional person, you probably won't feel comfortable or at ease in a contemporary-styled home.

So how do you discover your interior design style? Follow these steps…

Step 1: Find Inspiring Visuals Without Overthinking

You may not think you prefer a particular style, but you most likely do. Years ago, when clients were unsure of what they wanted, I advised them to look through decorating magazines (before the Internet) and clip out photos they liked AND didn't like. I had them look beyond just colors to furniture and window treatments as well.

Now I tell clients to save photos they see online and create a file or board for specific rooms.

Step 2: Determine the Common Elements Between Images

After you have at least 5 photos on your like/dislike boards, look at them and see if you notice a common thread. It may be a color combination, furniture style, or layered window treatments.

If you're still not sure, that's ok. I can help you with that. It's sometimes very subtle, and you don't notice it at first.

Step 3: Start a Concept Board for Your Room

Once you have narrowed down your design details, you can create a design concept for the room you have in mind.

If you or your budget are not ready to complete an entire room at once, I can help you break it down into manageable segments. For some people, a lot of changes at once can be overwhelming. Also, check out How to Refresh Your Current Furnishings to Update Your Space.
